Everyone feels a little unhappy from time to time but when unhappiness seems to fill your life, it may have a lot to do with your habits. There are actually bad habits that make you feel unhappy and make life, in general, seem worse than it really is. If you’re feeling a little underappreciated or just plain sad, your habits may be responsible for making you blue.
Bad Habits That Make You Feel Unhappy
Comparing yourself to others
If you make a habit of comparing yourself to others, it can have a profound effect on your mood and attitude. It forces you to focus on what you don’t have instead of all the positive things in your life. You usually end up feeling jealous and envious of what other people have, resulting in low self-esteem that makes you feel bad about yourself.
Expecting perfection all the time
There will always be something out of place or not done perfectly because human beings make mistakes. Striving for perfection all the time leads to disappointment and excessive stress that quickly leads to unhappiness. (It can really impact your marriage too. Read Habits that Hurt Your Marriage.)
Complaining too much
There will be times when you feel the need to complain but does it seem like you’re constantly complaining about something? If so, then you’re probably making yourself a lot more miserable than you would be if you focused on the good things in your life. Strive to make improvements and take steps to change things you don’t like instead of complaining about the way things are and watch how quickly your mood can improve.
Always trying to make a good impression
Trying to impress others uses up precious energy that is better spent pursuing the things that truly make you happy in life. Spend time with friends and family that you enjoy being with and just be yourself instead of trying to make a good impression on everyone else. You’ll be a lot happier because you’ll be busy enjoying life instead of worrying about what others think of you.
Being negative
Do you see the glass as being half full or half empty? If you always focus on the negative, naturally you’re going to feel sad and unhappy. Things happen all the time and problems arise. The way you deal with these problems affects your mood. If you have a habit of looking at the bad side of everything instead of the good, it will have a negative impact on you and everyone around you. (Have you read this article about how to raise a positive child?)
Do you have any of the bad habits listed above? If so, it may be time to re-evaluate your lifestyle and make some changes that will help improve your mood.
Bad habits have a way of creating stress and problems where there normally wouldn’t be any and no one needs to deal with more stress than necessary. Unfortunately, bad habits are hard to break but not impossible. Be aware of your habits and strive to replace the bad ones with good habits that’ll benefit you in some way. It will improve your mood and make a difference in how happy you really are.
