Have fun exploring the sea with this easy and adorable under the sea craft tutorial for kids!
Ocean Craft for Preschoolers
Living so close to the ocean, my girls have grown up around the water and I wouldn’t want it any other way. It’s my happy place and I hope it becomes theirs as well. Since we can’t be at the beach every day, we like to bring the ocean to us. This easy under the sea craft is one of the ways we’ve done that.
So many paper crafts are great for older preschoolers and elementary-age kids, but this is one of those under the sea crafts that even toddlers can work on. That made this craft the perfect one when my girls were little!
How to Make Under the Sea Crafts
One of my favorite things about this ocean craft for preschoolers is that it doesn’t require any fancy materials. In fact, chances are that you have everything you need right in your craft cabinet today!
To make the under the sea craft scene with your toddler or preschooler, you’ll need to gather:
- craft paper of different colors
- googly eyes (if you don’t have these, you can always draw eyes on!)
- a glue stick
- a pencil
- kid-safe scissors
- the printable template
The idea is to cut geometric shapes out of the craft paper and turn it into ocean animals and creatures. If you’re not quite sure how to do that, don’t worry! You can follow the steps in the picture example below.
My girls actually like following the pictures while I like printing out the directions and reading them. Isn’t it awesome how we all learn and create differently?! I think it’s fabulous!
If you’re making these with toddlers, you might want to cut the template shapes out ahead of time and just give them the pre-cut pieces to work with as they make their ocean craft.

Under the Sea Toddler Craft
Ingredients
- colored construction paper
- printable template
- scissors
- craft glue
- googly eyes
Instructions
- Select colored construction paper for the craft and prepare the template shapes by printing and cutting them out. Trace the shape cut-outs on the selected craft papers and cut them out nicely. You can also do freehand drawings of the shapes. The template includes square, circle, triangle, star, and arch shapes.
- Get creative in this step. You can use a triangle and a circle to make a fish pattern, or you can also use a trapezium and a triangle to make a fish pattern. To make a jellyfish pattern, use an arch shape for the body and thin strips for the bottom side of the jellyfish. Use craft glue to attach the shapes and complete each pattern.
- Add googly eyes to the fish and jellyfish patterns. Use a black sharpie to draw smiley faces on them.
- Prepare a piece of blue construction paper for the ocean background and start adding the shape cutouts to create the undersea craft scene.Â
- Add the fish, jellyfish and other shape items to create the under the sea craft scene.
- Create more colorful shape fish, jellyfish, starfish, and other items. Use craft glue to attach the prepared items to the blue background paper and have fun!
